What Does "Free" Cost in 2026? Help Us Grade Every F2P MMO Shop

Every MMO on our list is free to download. What it costs to enjoy is another question, and we're asking you to answer it.

Check your coin purse, adventurer. Every game on our Best F2P MMOs list costs nothing to download. What it costs to enjoy is a different question, and the honest answer changes from world to world.

So we're not answering it alone. We built a meter for it, and the meter runs on your votes.

Five steps from fair to foul

Everyone who rates a game on F2PMMO also places its shop somewhere on our pay-to-win meter:

  1. Cosmetic only. Money buys looks. Nothing else.
  2. Convenience. Money saves clicks: more bag space, faster travel, extra character slots.
  3. Time skips. Money buys hours: boosts, catch-up items, level skips.
  4. Power for sale. Money buys stats or gear that matter in a fight.
  5. Pay-to-win. The deepest wallet usually wins.

The badge on each game is the average of every vote. No studio can buy a better one; that's in our editorial policy.

Where money and play meet

The games that most need your grades are the ones that blur the line on purpose. A few of the best-known:

  • Warframe sells Platinum, its premium currency, and players can trade it with each other. Patient Tenno earn it without spending a cent.
  • Guild Wars 2 runs a currency exchange that turns in-game gold into gems for the shop, and gems back into gold.
  • EVE Online sells PLEX, which pilots trade for ISK on the in-game market. Free Alpha clones can fly much of New Eden; Omega status unlocks the rest.
  • Old School RuneScape sells Bonds, which can be traded for gold or redeemed for membership.

Fair trade? Convenience? A time skip in disguise? Players disagree, which is exactly why we count votes instead of writing verdicts.

Why the fairest-shops list is empty (for now)

Our Least Pay-to-Win F2P MMOs list ranks only games that players have graded, and only games scoring 6.5 or higher overall make the cut. Good games first, fair ones second.

Right now that list is waiting on you. Rate the game you play most and place its shop on the meter. It takes a minute, the badge updates the moment your vote lands, and you earn VOID for it.
